Today, our Governor signed a bill into effect that codified the right to abortion in Minnesota through birth, for any reason. Although abortion has already been legal in Minnesota for decades, this ruling solidifies that our state has become a “safe haven” for those seeking even late-term abortions.
I have been incredibly burdened by the weightiness of this new reality as I have watched it unfold. While my heart is so heavy over the impact this will have on both women and their children, I believe it should also propel us into action by increasing our care and compassion toward those who are hurting. There has already been a 13% increase in out-of-state patients coming to Minnesota for abortions as well as an increase in second trimester abortions, according to the Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood North Central States, Dr. Sarah Traxler.
Our experience has shown us that women considering abortion are under tremendous stress and pressure, especially later in their pregnancy. This new reality means we need to do everything we can to reach these women coming to Minnesota for their abortions. I believe this demands an immediate response from us at New Life to reach even more women, men, children, and families with the love and compassion of Christ. We are truly needed now more than ever.
